Airline pilots can become Astronauts.
For example: Thomas Pesquet... He never served in the military.
Also, Howard Wolowitz, and he didn't even have a doctorate.

Another great example.
Astronauts come from all walks of life.
They are only required to have nerves of
diamond and they also have to be a capable person in good health.
Most of the exams NASA comes up with are designed to test patience and resourcefulness, not how many correct answers you get.
