Not only that, but a "Magnum" is a revolver IRL, and the Halo Magnum doesn't look that far off of a handgun.
The shotgun is literally the generic shotgun you could think off if someone said, "shotgun".

Perhaps it has something to do with th game's ESRB / etc ratings?
