I draw a lot so for me pens are a no no, I can’t shade properly with them, I can’t vary in texture and intensity. Pens are better for writing.

Pens can’t be erased and the erasable ones don’t even erase very well
Normal pencils are the classic reliable pencil
Mechanical pencils can be fragile but are easy to erase make thinner lines and are great for shading
Charcoal pencils are the shading
